I'm moving in whether you like it or not

Ever here of Hazelton, Pennsylvania? It’s in the middle of very interesting trial in federal court. I’m somewhat torn. Well, not really. Let me give you the brief recitation of the facts of Hazelton, PA: In a matter of a couple of years this small town of about 30,000 have been overrun with illegal aliens from Mexico and Central America. This town has seen an increase of violent crimes, narcotics activity, and gang activity. The barbaric and vicious Central American gang/guerrilla soldiers of MS-13 are even present in this town that could never be described as a teaming “metropolis.” The other results of this influx of illegal immigrants are a completely overwhelmed local healthcare system, social services, law enforcement and educational system. The answer? According to the city it’s the drafting and passing of the Illegal Immigration Relief Act. The Act came after a couple of extremely violent crimes by illegals. This Act fines and punishes citizens for renting to illegals or employing illegals (that’s just for starters). The city officials decided if the Feds wouldn’t do anything to patch the Sieve that is the American borders then they would. In steps the ACLU and the rest is you know in Federal court. Well, any first year law student can tell you, what the town did violates supremacy clause of the Constitution (i.e., Feds rule, States drool). But, here is my problem---what the hell were they supposed to do? Crime went up 30%! Violence, gangs and drugs are terrorizing this little town. Of course, some illegals are looking for a better life. (Why they don’t fight for a better life in their own country is baffling to me, but whatever.) But, some of these people are just plain criminals. The welcome of the Statute of Liberty says give me your huddle masses yearning to breathe free, not give me your vile, brutal criminals yearning to kill, maim and intimidate. The question is why doesn’t the Federal government fix the border. Let people in through the proper channels. We cannot continue on this path of turning a blind eye to border patrol (uh, 9/11, duh). We have an infrastructure problem as it is—no need to overburden it with an illegal alien problem as well. I have no doubt that many illegals work hard in this country, but they should come in under the legal measures set in place. I have nothing against Latinos, I do have a problem with people from other countries coming here and living without any oversight or regulations. There is a rule of law that should be enforced. How would you feel if I moved into your garage for a better life and you couldn’t do anything but feed me, give me free medical care, and educate all my children for free? All I would have to do is displace you from your job and get paid less to do the same work or more. Good deal. I’ll be over in the middle of night and your neighbors are going to make you do it. See ya soon!

This is a good topic. Like many folks, I think about this issue often. I think about the hypocrisy of the current administrator in giving lip service about the need to continue the war in Iraq and Afghanistan to "rid the Mid East of terrorists" and "so we wont't have to fight 'them' over here."

But the hypocrisy is even more sickening when one thinks about how open our Southern borders are? The original Swiss cheese ---holes on top of holes. Where is the national security in that? Shouldn't we be concerned that members of Al-Queda could figure out that they could just fly into any part of Mexico and walk right over into the grand ol' USA to do what they will? Why not -- security is limited and you sure as hell aren't gonna get the perp pat-down like you do at your average American airport, post 9-11? But again, hypocrisy is the name of the game for all White House administrations -- especially this one.

But here is my conflict -- I am secretly enjoying seeing these little old lilly-white towns become brown, overnight. These towns in placeslike rural Kentucky, GA,SC, IN, OH, NC and apparently PA, too, are now so brown the white folk can't stand it. With a change in color, comes a change in cultural attitude. I love seeing a more Brown/Black/Yellow/Multi-everything America.

I smile on the inside when hear that someone with the name Gonzales or Ramirez is living in "Po-Dunk, Kentucky" or "Nowheresville, Georgia".

I just love it. These are the same "sun-down" towns where Black folk were regularly run out on the rails or lynched with a quickness for no reason besides skin shade. How can one not revel in the Irony?

The hypocrisy of this thing called Homeland Security, the blatant violations of immigration laws and the burdens to the country's health, school, welfare and criminal justice system are obvious, apparent and cannot be ignored in the hopes that 12-15 million non-citizens will just go away. But damn, I am loving seeing the Brown in the towns that made Black folk so miserable and fearful once upon a time (and sometimes, even now).

Justice, you are one Poetic son-of-a-gun.

In response to TB's blog, from a representative of the "white folk" in "Po dunk Kentucky":

It seems to me TB has probably never met anyone from these small towns or spent any real time in them. I believe if he did, he would find that most "white folk" in these towns are down-to-earth good people. They harbor no malice against anyone because of the color of their skin. Of course, there are the exceptions. Unfortunately, these exceptions have become the face of rural areas. But, racists reside in all areas from small towns to big cities. Cities have whites-only country clubs. Small towns have other mechanisms of racism. Other than the size of the wallet, how are they different.

Therefore, I take issue with the accusation that "white folk" oppose illegal immigration because they can't stand seeing their "lilly white" towns turn brown. Would you like to know the problem I have with Illegal Immigrants - THEY ARE ILLEGAL. Period. They come to this country as criminals. I don't want white, black, brown, or yellow criminals to live in my community. Furthermore, they are an enormous drain on the resources of small-town America. Emergency personnel, medical personnel, law enforcement - they are all at their wits end on how to deal with the sudden rise in population. A population that doesn't speak English or understand our laws. There just aren't enough resources to meet this growing demand.

In closing, this white girl from po-dunk Kentucky could care less about the shade of people in her town. The contention that the issue of immigration is really an issue of race for people living with it everyday is both close-minded and ignorant.

“They are illegal end of discussion,” it not a sound argument. Of course they are illegal because some people with malice against other group a long time ago made it so. We should look at our history and then in the mirror when we say things like this.

It’s interesting that when the wave of immigrants in this country began to get browner the issue of illegal came up. Saying that illegal aliens bring crime is ridiculous. Crime exists everywhere and has no color code. If anything, crime tends to follow lack of education and capital. Most immigrants to this country actually revitalize areas that we Americans have abandoned. A perfect example is Buford Hwy in Atlanta. The close comparison in Louisville is the Americana apartment’s area.

However it should be noted that in the 1900’s when the Irish and the eastern Europeans came to this country in droves they too were not welcomed. They ended up creating organized gangs of criminals. This is not myth but historical and most of the older generation of these groups are able to testify to the factuality of it. Later these groups were absorbed into the group called white American. We obviously don’t know our history.

There are some interesting facts that most people don’t want to acknowledge in this issue.

1. The education and healthcare systems in this country have been in distress since at least the 70’s. So are we going to blame Latinos? Yes you may argue that they are putting strain on the system…but let’s focus on the underlining issue and not the symptoms… The Healthcare, Educational, and YES Judicial/Political systems of this country are SICK and need to be revised to say the least.
2. Illegal aliens do pay taxes. If anything they MAY not pay income tax. However there are some works that still deduct the federal tax from their Latino worker salaries. Besides income tax everyone in this country pays taxes. It is a fact of life in this country that you will pay taxes. When ever you purchase ANYTHING service or product in this country you are paying taxes. Even with their sending money back to Mexico there is a tax on that.
3. The economy work with people expanding it and a large available supply of labor. Regardless of what some people say, you CAN’T PAY MOST AMERICANS enough to pick vegetable or watch bratty children. You just can’t, I’m sorry. Most of us have a since of entitlement that we won’t do ANY AND EVERY kind of job. You would have to pay at least $10/hr which the same conservatives claim isn’t feasible. So which is it? You want cheap labor or you want to raise the minimum wage to a livable level?

*****Finally, here’s my conspiracy theory. These politicians are just playing on people’s fears. The government WANTS Mexicans here. You can’t convince me that the most powerful nation in the history of the world can’t keep Jose’ and Maria from crossing over sparse desert. This government does what it wants and it’s obvious that the business interests in this nation in conjunction with the politico’s WANT CHEAP MEXICAN LABOR WHICH WILL NOT COMPLAIN AND TAKE WHAT EVER IS GIVEN TO IT!

It's disgusting to think that there are people out there who wish malice upon people who have the fortunate blessing to live in peaceful towns? Just because YOU feel they live in towns that harbor racist pasts that means they are getting what they deserve? And really, are you 100% sure the whole town participated and did this "event" include the current population or are we talking about the sins of the fathers?

As a previous poster said, illegal immigrants pose more harm than good to this country in cost alone. So what if it's cheap labor for business or if they come here for a better life... there are legal avenues to travel for the luxury of living in America.

i have a response to felicia: I would not presume that they do not fight for a better life in their own country. I am sure that they have organizations fighting for social causes just as we do. Individual struggles aside, it shouldn't be too difficult to grasp what might drive a person to uproot themselves and their family for the hope of something better in a place considerably foriegn to them: Desperation. I do not believe that their lack of options should make it a-okay for them to populate this and all other territories ill-suited to support illegal residents, but I do believe a great many of us comment on their actions as if they were so utterly baffling. As if what they do is so 'alien'.

its time to start sending them home most of them don't care about our laws .it cost more for them being here then they pay in taxes
