Here I go again wasting more precious life hours on Felicia's blog. Everytime I think I'm out, she pulls me back in. (I am channeling Al Pacino as Michael Corleone).
But okay. Hmmmm. I am torn by #4 as well. I know exactly what you mean by "drug dealer uniform and standard issue SUV". And yet, I wonder, should we tell the world (i.e. white people) that we know what they know but they think we don't know about drug dealers overtaking our communities in foolish display?
Hmmmm. Should we air our dirty laundry on this issue? But, like brother Bill Cosby said in the course of his infamous speeches a little less than 2 years ago..."Our dirty laundry is on the corner everyday, with pants sagging to their knees, ridiculous grills in their mouths and speaking with broken English." (this is a paraphrase, despite the quotation marks)
With all this being said and knowing what we know, if we don't want to confront it and fix it, do we really have the right to be MAD, Black Folk?
At some point we have to take responsibility for ending our contribution to constantly being targeted and becoming "victims". And some alleged victims do wear "drug dealer uniforms", do they not? Can we end the victimization by changing how we, in part, present ourselves to the world?
And yes, Crescent Hill and the Highlands are full of self-absorbed cultural snobs.

Because people don’t want to think critically or examine themselves in regards to the situations or circumstances they find themselves in. Chris Rock even said it in one of his routines, “Why get mad when the police mistake you for the drug dealer and you hang with them?” In our community there seems to be a lack of shame. As an over response to the legitimate discrimination we as Africans face in this country, our community in some families and areas has turned into a free for all. When was the last time someone was chastised for having a baby as a teen, dropping out of school, not getting a trade, selling drugs, cheating on their spouse or partner, wasting money….Generally not taking care of business. You associate with the drug dealer but you claim you don’t do it. Is anyone familiar with guilt by association? It is true that some black men are stop with out probable cause. There are studies which show that blacks are stop more frequently than white over issues that whites aren’t. There is a false perception that blacks are more likely to do and or sell drugs. However nationally this isn’t the case. The reason more blacks are prosecuted for this and other crime is because of profiling. While the law establishment is focusing on blacks…the whites and other groups are doing the same thing and getting away with it…because of perception! The drug dealer uniform? That’s an interesting phrase. There are some who believe it is black culture to dress a certain way, talk a certain way, and behave a certain way. This is true as it is of any other group…however there is a problem within and with out the community when it is believed that so called NEGATIVE actions and behaviors are black! Black America and America in general needs a “Cultural Revolution!”

Because many don’t have the same issues that straight men have. In our country it’s masculine to be a jock, not overly smart, risk taker, oblivious to ones emotion and that of others, to always be competitive with each other. Also women don’t demand much of men. I tell this to women all the time and they don’t believe me. They rule the world and have the key to power yet refuse to use it. Men do things to impress women and brag amongst themselves. However it goes back to women. That’s why there are some grass roots movement to offer separate boys and girls schools. It’s believed with out the distraction of the opposite sex that maybe boys with pay more attention to academics and self improvement. This may be another explanation for the stereotypical successful gay male. In high school most boys are attempting to impress and date girls. Many gay males realized that they are gay at this time. As they are not trying to impress girls they have more time to devote to other interests. Of course this is all theory. However it does seem valid. This is why some guys go to the extreme and behave as gays to attract women! But if women want men to be more interesting, smart, compassionate and such, they have to demand it. It starts in high school. Men like most people will do what you allow them to do. If the captain of the football team gets more girls than the captain of the debate team…then why would guy want to join the debate team? If the class clown is adored by girls then why would other guys in class want to pay attention and learn? As a straight friend told me women don’t realize these things till they are much older. However by this time many have been used by the bad guys, have more than one child what have you and suddenly decide they want the good guy. Here’s an epiphany, one dude on the radio some time ago lamented that women wouldn’t have sex with him. He said his problem was that he was a good guy…(Job, stable, attractive, intelligent etc..) However girls would get with the bad guy, and immediately want to have sex with them! The women would say, “I like you and I want to get to know you and not mess up like I did with the others.” Interesting… The guy that treats you bad gets the reward of your affections but the good guys has to wait etc…:) I’m not saying go out and give it up to the good guys…just some food for thought…

First, Mark Foley is not a pedophile. A pedophile is someone that is sexually attracted to children, prepubescent! There is a frightening rush in American society to associate homosexuality with pedophilia and they are to exclusive things and non-related. Studies have shown that most pedophiles are heterosexual! I hate to do this as I’m a liberal and I’m glad that the conservatives are getting their comeuppance but I stand for truth and knowledge first. I’m glad that the Republicans are being pummeled by this incident and I hope it is reflected in these upcoming elections. However here is the behind the scenes story. Mark Foley was accused of this before and people that broached the topic were demonized and called baiters for even suggesting that Foley was gay! This is an example of the fear and distaste that America has for homosexuality. Mark Foley is not guilty of breaking the law! The young men in question were of legal consenting age. People don’t want to address this. Mark Foley is guilty of hypocrisy, immorally and maybe even of sexual harassment! The men were under his power and we do have laws against people using their offices to seduce their underlings. Most people do not want to consider that the young men may have actually encouraged and welcomed the sexual interest of Foley! (I can see people covering their eyes, ears and mouths now.) 16yr olds have very active libidos! Because people are concerned that it was two males they are neglecting other issues. 1. This man was in charge of a committee to protect children! (In his mind and LEGALLY he was not in the wrong or acting contrary to his position as I stated the age of consent in D.C. is 16yrs) However according to most codes of ethics for workplace behavior he was in the wrong as he was in authority over these men. 2. This happens all the time! We are only concerned with Foley because his action was with men. We all know that older men are attracted to younger women. Do you believe that no other of our representatives have had sexual liaisons with 16yrs women!? Is there any whisper of this!? (This maybe the answer to your question, (why protect….because many are guilty of the same act ONLY with women). 3. There was no mention of rape! Much of the interaction has been shown to be consensual where there were emails back and forth. However as he was in authority over the men…we really don’t know if it was or wasn’t welcomed. So let us attempt to view this current event critical.
1. Foley being gay do not justify his less than honorable behavior and there is no correlation.
2. Foley sent sexual emails and had sex with legal adults by the law of D.C. and many states. These men were not children
3. Personal opinion: Others knew this was going on and did nothing about it because they wanted to tow the status quo and are probably guilty of it themselves.
4. The Democrats probably did calculate this…. That’s the dirty business of politics and turn about is fair play.
5. Democrats don’t portray themselves to be the party of morality, family values, conservatives and what have you. Therefore they have no obligation to elect such. However, the Republicans…. There is outrage because the people have been fool! They didn’t get what they thought they bought!:)

The blessing and curse of the internet is that you can say and be who ever you want. The borders of social grace are removed and you can say whatever you want. It is scary to know how many people actually feel the ways you listed. However it’s interesting to consider that many don’t feel that way and are simply blowing off steam. But to answer you question, people respond to reward and punishment! We are animals and don’t want to admit it. You are trained from the time you enter the world on how to and not to behave! You are reward to socially desired actions and punished for actions which are contrary to the society. It’s curious to wonder how many people believe in the social niceties they portray. It is not longer cool or socially acceptable to be a racist or sexist. The social programs and engineering did not eradicate these feeling, they simply pushed them to the fringes of our society and underground where they can do less harm. It take more that some sheets of papers a few years and government to change ideals which were formed over centuries.

Interesting question… I would wonder if you as a lawyer have one and as a lawyer why you are renting. I’m not being condescending, just wondering. Actually there are various reasons for this.
1. The luxury car may actually be part of their business, there are some businesses where you have to maintain a certain image and the car helps in that task.
2. They may have their money invested in other things besides mortgage. An economic analyst on nightline actually stated that people who don’t pay a mortgage which is generally more than rent have more income to direct toward other investment which may pay better dividends than real estate!
3. You can’t afford a house but you can afford your dream car. Why should you deprive yourself as not buying the car would not necessarily give you enough money for a house anyway? I can have the care but I can’t have the house or condo so I may as well have some happiness in my life and enjoy the car. Also there are someone people with friend in high place that can get them deals that you and I aren’t privy too. If someone sold you a BMW at cost (No interest) or better yet at the same price that you pay for your current car… (You as a lawyer with favorable employment and income to afford maintenance and insurance) wouldn’t you jump on that deal? There are more people with those connections then you might be aware of. Better yet, your parents give it to you!

And one more thing. A pedophile is an adult who is sexually attracted to children. Anyone under the age of 18 should not have sex with a 50 year old. The legal age of consent may be an arbitrary, particular age, but Foley targeted "children" in the true sense of the word: a dependent living at home with parents, no job, and attending school. I'm sure there were plenty of gay men that would have been his "secret lover." He likes the vulnerability and innocence of youth. A 50 year old man shouldn’t have sex with a 16 year old “woman” either. A 16 year old is NOT an adult no matter what the law says. There are inconsistencies in the law. An 18 year cannot enter into a contract---it would be invalid. The legal drinking age is 21. An 18 year old can vote and join the army, and you can drop out of secondary school at 16. All of that is completely inconsistent. The prefrontal lobe (associated with complex thought, such as planning, anticipation, judgment, problem-solving and inhibition of impulses) of the adult brain doesn’t stop growing until the mid-forties. So how can me expect a 16 year old to a critical thinker of the consequences of sex with a much older adult. Pedophilia is a sexual deviant behavior like bestiality or necrophilia, not a sexual orientation. A pedophile can be gay or straight. Of course most pedophiles are heterosexual, because MOST PEOPLE ON EARTH ARE HETEROSEXUAL. Saying a 16 year old boy is MAN who can choose to have sex with a 50 plus year old man is tantamount to saying a 16 year girl is woman who can choose to become pregnant and be a mother. We’re going to have to disagree on this one. There’s a first time for everything!
